Bukoba — KAGERA Regional Commissioner (RC),
Mr Fabian Massawe has appealed to residents in the region to cooperate
with government operatives who are fighting illegal fishing by exposing
people who use banned methods in fishing.
Mr Massawe made the call at the weekend when destroying various illegal fishing gear which were impounded during a recent crack down.
He urged Beach Management Units (BMUs) to work closely with the Lake Victoria Surveillance Unit in fighting the vice.
RC Massawe said that a total of 4,291 kgs of immature fish and various illegal fishing gear were confiscated during the operation to save Lake Victoria resources.
He said that among the confiscated items included 4,453 pieces of under sized nets, 670 pieces of monofilaments and 100 pieces of gillnets.
He also said that 13 suspects were arrested and would be arraigned when investigations are complete. Pollution and environmental degradation has also led to the extinction of more than 400 fish species in lake Victoria over the last four decades.
Fish in Lake Victoria were also being plundered at an alarming rate a situation that calls for urgent steps to save the resources.
A recent survey conducted around Lake Victoria's shores by Lake Victoria Environmental Management Programme (LVEMP) revealed that fish breeding grounds have been destroyed at a large scale.
