Mr Hamis
Maranda, a Dar es Salaam resident, had once confessed to have murdered a
Greek woman, Ms Petroula Chatzipantazi, in September 2012.
Maranda alias Okobasi made the confession in his
caution statement taken at a police station shortly after being arrested
on the allegation.
Senior State Attorney Monica Mbogo told the High Court Judge Rose Temba on Monday when the case appeared for first plea.
Ms Mbogo asked the court to receive the caution
statement as exhibit in the case, the request which was strongly
objected by the accused led by his advocate Peter Kibatala on the ground
that his client was tortured and forced to make the confession.
Reading memorandum of facts, Ms Mbogo alleged that
on September 24, 2012, Ms Chatzipantazi, who was a medical doctor
seconded to work in Tanzania as a volunteer by the ministry of Foreign
Affairs of Greece, was in a group of about 30 colleagues walking down
the road going to an event at the Hellenic Centre along Ali Hassan
Mwinyi road in the city centre. But as they were walking a vehicle
approached from behind and upon reaching Ms Chatzipantazi, 48, Maranda,
allegedly snatched her handbag. She did not let it go and ended up being
dragged for some metres, leaving her with serious injuries.
The vehicle disappeared with the deceased handbag.
The deceased was taken to Agakhan hospital but she died at the same night as a result of internal bleeding.
On the next day, September 24, 2012 Corporal Salma
of Kisutu Police Station saw a handbag with no one and after searching
on it she saw IPad and three mobile phones.
It was further alleged that, according to
investigation done by police, the properties are among the things stolen
from the deceased.
The prosecution did not say, however, whether
Maranda was found with the bag, but only said that on October 15, 2012,
Maranda was arrested and confessed to have caused the murder during
interrogation.
However, the accused disputed all facts expects his names.
In order to prove the disputed facts, prosecution
intends to call five witnesses along with two exhibits during the
hearing of the case.
