NAIROBI, KENYA: Fifteen MPs from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) party met secretly in Nairobi Monday as schemes to oust the current party leadership intensified.
Among Members of Parliament who attended the meeting at a Nairobi hotel were Moses ole Sakuda (Kajiado North), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika), Kimani Inchun’gwa (Kikuyu) and Tiya Galgalo (Isiolo). The legislators have stepped up efforts to change the leadership and are holding a series of meetings to plan for the upheaval.
Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja is currently the chairperson, Onyango Oloo, who was recently appointed chairman of the Lake Basin Development Authority, is the secretary general and Lydia Mokaya, who now works in the President’s political office, deputises Sakaja.
The MPs met to brainstorm around the plot that insiders say would help bridge loopholes and strengthen TNA’s parliamentary capacity in the wake of fears that the party could have been jolted in Parliament by its Jubilee coalition partner, the United Republican Party (URP).
OPINION POLL
Buoyed by the recent opinion survey that for the first time saw TNA overtake Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the country’s most popular political party, the lawmakers believe more needs to be done to improve the party’s ratings as the country’s party of choice.
According to a recent survey by Strategic PR, TNA tops as the most popular party followed by ODM, with Deputy President William Ruto’s URP party – a member of the ruling Jubilee coalition – coming third.
Architects of the scheme say TNA needs a more vibrant leadership to ease pressure on the party leader President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is overwhelmed by State affairs.
“We realise that since we won the election we have never moved across the country to thank our supporters because we like a leadership that can guide us,” said Sakuda.
