Sitta vs Chenge: Who will map out Tanzania’s political future?

Two veteran politicians have emerged as the top contenders for the position of permanent chair of the Katiba Assembly, as delegates calls for rapid deployment of a secret ballot to fill this crucial position.
For pundits of local renown and Bunge-obsessed politicos, former Speaker of the National Assembly Samwel Sitta is the clear frontrunner.
Years of experience at the helm of a Parliament besieged by scandal, from the murky underbelly of Richmond to the filth exposed during the BAE radar saga, gives the Urambo East MP the edge as he goes for pole position at the Constituent Assembly.
CA delegates could also tap former minister and Attorney General Andrew Chenge to helm the Katiba Assembly, according to local Bunge watchers.
The Harvard-educated Bariadi West MP is mostly remembered for resigning during his tenure as Attorney General in 2008 to pave way for an investigation into allegations he’d received kickbacks worth over USD 1m during the BAE radar saga.
Whatever they decide, CA members have a tough job ahead of them. They’re expected to deliver a Katiba that echoes the hopes, wishes and aspirations of the millions of Tanzanians who sent them to Dodoma.
Whoever they choose, delegates who spoke to The Citizen seem to understand that their decisions over the next few days will, without a doubt, determine the course of Tanzania’s modern political history.
