CCM national chairman, President Kikwete, addresses a rally.
As CCM marks its 37th anniversary, it is obvious
that it has been facing various challenges, including the consequences
of its own actions, due to failure to enforce its own fundamental
principles of promoting socioeconomic development among Tanzanians.
The ruling party has been criticised for seeming
to derail from the original principles that projected it as an outfit
that catered for the interests, hopes and aspirations of wananchi, but
the Opposition camp is also criticised for not adhering to democratic
practices that it professes it is championing abandonSome

As CCM marks its 37th anniversary, it is obvious
that it has been facing various challenges, including the consequences
of its own actions, due to failure to enforce its own fundamental
principles of promoting socioeconomic development among Tanzanians.
This is partly the work of unethical and greedy
members who use the weakness of the party’s senior leaders to ruin the
party’s reputation through corruption, embezzlement of public funds,
violation of the party’s constitution, and endless squabbles and power
mongering.
This situation has put the party in a critical
danger zone, as public trust has been considerably eroded, since the
majority feel that the party is no longer serving the interests of
peasants and workers but is for rich people instead, as these have the
power to control it.

I am amazed by CCM’s capability to rejuvenate, the
way a snake sheds off its old skin. The party has managed to do so each
time it is on the verge of crumbling. CCM can tactfully tame odd
members, fine-tune nomination procedures and amend its constitution.
In addition it has maintained a truly countrywide
network which is both expansive and deep rooted. That CCM is the only
party which has not been haunted by divisive politics along tribal,
religious or racial lines is indisputable. Partisan enthusiasm aside,
CCM is the only team whose posture boasts national status.
Almost all other parties have been rocked by
perennial wrangles and reduced to mere factions. It is a solid reality
that a good number of existing parties don’t practise democratic
principles and barely cling to life on purely legal technicalities.

Apart from being the ruling party since
independence, CCM has to watch what is going on within the party,
including corruption and division. This is not a healthy situation,
which has to be rectified if the party wishes to maintain its status for
many more years.
