Chadema national chairman Freeman Mbowe introduces Grace Mvanda as his
party’s flag bearer for the upcoming Kalenga constituency by-election
during a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Dar es Salaam. The main
opposition Chadema warned yesterday it would boycott the Constituent
Assembly kicking off in Dodoma on Tuesday if the ruling CCM uses its
numerical strength to change the second Draft Constitution to suit the
party’s interests.
The party has also expressed dissatisfaction with
President Jakaya Kikwete’s choice of 201 members of the Constituency
Assembly last week, saying the choices reflect CCM’s preparedness to
advance their interests at the expense of wider national interests.
This was said by Chadema national chairman Freeman
Mbowe when briefing reporters on resolution of the party’s Central
Committee meeting that sat yesterday in the city.
The CC discussed, among other things, the party’s
position regarding the Constituency Assembly, the upcoming parliamentary
by-election in Kalenga constituency and the leadership dispute in the
Arusha Council.
Mr Mbowe claimed that members backing CCM were
going to Dodoma to make sure that the agenda of political parties do not
sail through using their numerical strength in the Assembly.
“First, we are not satisfied with the selection of
the members. Our position has always been to let organisations choose
their representatives and not to send the names to the President for him
to choose for them,” he explained.
“If you critically look at President Kikwete’s
list you will discover so many CCM cadres have been picked from various
groups to ensure the party’s agenda make it in the new constitution,” he
added.
He also introduced the party’s candidate in
Kalenga by-election Ms Grace Mvanda to end earlier speculations about Mr
Lucas Sinkala to represent the party. Ms Mvanda holds a Master’s
degree.
in Arts in Applied Social Psychology beat 13 other contestants to carry the flag of the main opposition in the by-election.
He would be competing with Geoffrey Mgimwa of CCM
who fight to succeed his father Dr William Mgimwa who held the position
before his death in December last year.
