Dodoma. CCM national chairman
President Jakaya Kikwete has asked members of his ruling party to stand
firm and defend it whenever it is threatened.
President Kikwete, who is also the ruling party’s
national chairman, told the members not to look weak and shy to confront
the opposition when defending the party’s interests.
He was speaking in reference to a number of events
that had happened in previous by-elections when addressing the CCM
National Executive Committee (NEC) here. He gave an example of a
by-election in Igunga where a CCM member was attacked with acid.
He alleged that whenever there is an election, the
party lines up against rowdy parties which do not exercise civilised
politics.
“We have discussed that in the Central Committee
and agreed that we should no longer be weak,” he said amid cheers from
the delegates, who among other things are expected to assess the
country’s political situation and forge the party’s common agenda for
the upcoming Constituent Assembly scheduled to kick-start its marathon
meeting next week in Dodoma.
He said events like the one in Kahama District where a man’s eye was pierced to be outdated and uncivilised.
“Let’s us not be afraid…let you journalists leave all the news, but say this…we won’t be cowed…patience has its end,” he said.
The CCM chairman spoke when he opened a CCM NEC
meeting that was convened to discuss the party’s position on the Second
Draft Constitution, due for discussion in Dodoma next week.
“We have a by-election coming up in Kalenga (Iringa) where we already have a candidate…let’s go there and make sure we win.”
He asked the party members to prepare properly for the by-election to make sure the party gets a resounding win.
“We are confident that we will win…we now don’t have a case like that in East Arumeru which had our members divided.”
He said the party’s win in by-elections conducted
last week in 27 wards across the nation where CCM won in 23 wards, was a
testimony that it still had the voters’ support across the country
