The officer was alleged to have demanded Sh100,000
from a family of Suzana James, 28, who committed suicide on January 30,
at Nyanzanda Village. It was reported that the amount was for cost of
fuel to transport the body to the district hospital from the village.
However, according to the report, the family of
had only Sh50,000 which they gave to a local leader who was directed by
the officer instead of the requested Sh100,000.
Report from Sengerema said the officer, identified
by one name of Patrick, died on Sunday soon after arriving at Sengerema
Police Station where he was to report to the district police commanding
officer, Mr Balthazal Yohana.
According to the Nyakalilo ward councillor, Mr
Ibrahim Kalunga, the officer arrived at the police station to hand over a
boat engine which was abandoned at Kome Island.
“He collapsed and died on the spot soon after handing over the engine,” said the councillor.
Mr Nyakalilo suggested that the officer might have
died of diabetic complications, which he claimed had been troubling him
for many years. However, the OCD, who confirmed the death of the
officer, declined to comment on the cause of the death, saying it would
be made public after a release of a medical report
