Karatu. At least 67 per cent of 230,166 residents of Karatu Town are supplied with clean water from a government funded scheme.
The district executive director, Mr Moses Mabula,
revealed this before the minister for Water Prof Jumanne Maghembe, who
visited the area last week.
The scheme, Water Sector Development Programme
(WSDP) in the district, received Sh487,210,698 for WSDP projects during
2013/1014 financial year, according to Mr Mabula.
Contracts are being prepared with private
companies for implementation of eight of the ten water infrastructure
development projects which will cost Sh2.3 billion, he said, adding
about Sh1 billion has already been paid.
Mr Mabula noted that the source of water for the
town, which the district headquarters, is Ngorongoro highlands and
Marang forests on the Great Rift Valley rim. It also source water from
bore holes.
On the rural water supply, he said, during
2013/14, ten water projects would be implemented to benefit 33,233
residents of Getamuhog, Kansay, Khusumay, Laja, Umbangw, Buger,
Endanyowet, Mang’ola Juu, Makhoromba, Endamaghan, Mikocheni and Malala.
