On the eve of the long-awaited Katiba Assembly, the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (Tucta) says it wants the right of local workers to take part in strikes and other forms of industrial action enshrined in the new constitution.
General Secretary Nicholaus Mgaya says Tucta finds
the draft Katiba prepared by the Warioba-led Constitution Review
Commission wanting. “Some key issues, such as the right to strike, have
been written out of it,” said Mr Mgaya.
“They’re telling us Bunge will enact special
legislation to enforce labour issues [yet] if you look at the
constitutions of Kenya and South Africa, you’ll find that [workers] have
a constitutional right to strike.”
